Storms, landslides kill 5 in Ctg, Bhola, Patuakhali

Dhaka  – Five people were killed and 50 others injured as landslides and storms, triggered by the cyclonic storm ‘Roanu’, hit Chittagong, Bhola and Patuakhali districts on Saturday.In Bhola, Akram, a class VI student and son of Mafiz, was killed as a house collapsed on him at Shashiganj Bazar in Tajumuddin upazila around 3 am, said upazila chairman Wahidullah Jasim, UNB News Agency Reported.Besides, Rekha, 35, wife of Nayan, was killed instantly in their house collapse amid the stormy weather.At least 50 people, mostly women and children, were injured in the severe storm that lasted for 20 minutes in the upazila.Hundreds of houses, business establishments and shops were damaged, many trees and electric poles were uprooted during the storm.Meanwhile, 10,000 people in Charfashion upazila under Kukri Mukri union were marooned as tidal surge hit the areas, said Chairman of Kukri Mukri union, Abul Hashem.Besides, four people went missing as two sand-laden cargoes sank in the Meghna River in Ilisha of Sadar upazila during the heavy rains in the morning, said Khairul Kabir, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.In Chittagong, Kajal Begum, 45, and her son Belal Hossain, 10, were killed in a landslide at Jungle Salimpur in Sitakunda upazila early Saturday.Salimpur Upazila chairman Salahuddin Aziz said the incident took place when a chunk of mud collapsed on their thatched house in the early hours amid rainfalls, leaving them dead on the spot.In Patuakhali, Nayan Bibi, 52, was killed during storms at Uttar Charlaxmi village in Dasmina upazila early Saturday as cyclone Roanu moved towards Bangladesh’s coastal areas.Meanwhile, thousands of people got marooned in Kalapara and Galachipa upazilas as tidal surge hit the low-lying areas of the upazilas, the OC added.The cyclonic storm, ‘Roanu’, is likely to move in East-northeasterly direction further and may cross Barisal-Chittagong coast anytime soon, causing a storm surge of 4-5 feet height above normal tide.Under the influence of the cyclonic storm, gusty or squally wind has been continuing over the coastal areas of Bangladesh since early morning.The coastal districts of Chittagong, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Bhola, Borguna, Patuakhali, Barisal, Pirojpur, Jhalakati, Bagherhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars remained under the danger signal number seven (r) seven.
