Suhrawardy Udyan denied: BNP for May Day procession

Dhaka, April 30 – Being denied permission to hold a workers’ rally at Suhrawardy Udyan, the BNP has decided to bring out workers procession from in front of the party central office this morning to mark the to mark the historic May Day.“We have shifted the programme to the party central office as we have been denied permission to hold workers rally at Suhrawardy Udyan,” said Anwar Hossain, president of Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, an associate organization of the BNP.
He regretted that they sought permission from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) through a letter to hold the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on Tuesday but they the DMP still didn’t respond to them.
The Sramik Dal leader said the procession will be brought out at 11:00am today. He called upon workers and party leaders and activists to attend the rally.
He said they have already informed the DMP authorities about their May Day procession.
Meanwhile, talking to reporters BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi also regretted that the government did not allow the Sramik Dal to hold the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on the International Workers’ Day.
The Awami League does not allow its opponents to hold any public rally as it fears people and their gatherings,” he said
Earlier on 21 April, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan announced that Sramik Dal would hold a workers’ meeting at historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the city on 1 May.
The International Workers’ Day, falls on 1 May, will be observed in Bangladesh as elsewhere across the world on Tuesday amid various programmes highlighting the worker’s rights and safety at workplaces.
In another development, speaking at a press conference at party headquarters, Rizvi Ahmed accused the ruling Awami League leaders of making ridiculous remarks about sickness of party chairperson Khaleda Zia.
He reiterated the demand for unconditional release of the former premier and allow her to take treatment at United Hospital as per her desire.
The BNP leader expressed his concern over threatening party leaders and activists in Khulna and Gazipur and arresting them ahead of the city polls. He demanded deployment of army in both the cities to hold the polls keeping them free from influence of terrorists and musclemen.
Meanwhile, 101 senior physicians in a joint statement yesterday demanded providing better treatment to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
They alleged that the former premier is being deprived from proper treatment which they termed as violation of extreme human rights violation.
The physicians demanded providing Khaleda proper treatment immediately saying that if her health condition is being deteriorated further the government would have to take the responsibility.
The signatories include Prof Dr AKM Azizul Haque, Dr Farhad Halim Donar, Dr Rafiqul Kabir Labu, Dr Abdus Salam, Dr Harun-or-Rashid, Dr Md Shahid Hasan, Dr Md Shahidul Alam and Dr Zahirul Islam Shakil. –
