Suranjit’s ex-APS gets five years in jail in graft case

Dhaka – A Special Dhaka court yesterday sentenced former assistant personal secretary (APS) to former railways minister Suranjit Sengupta, five years prison in graft case for acquiring wealth beyond known income sources.
Dhaka’s Special Judge Mohammad Ataur Rahman sentenced Md Omar Faruk Talukder a five-year jail term.The court also fined Tk one crore and 23 lakh in the case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC). During the verdict, Faruk was on the court.
Talking to The Independent, Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya, ACC’s Deputy Director, said, the court also ordered to seize an apartment which was brought by Faruk at Mohammadpur area in the capital.
If Faruk fails to pay the fine, he will have to stay another two and half years in jail,
Defence lawyer Advocate Purnendu Debnath said, his client was out on bail, but he was taken to the jail after the verdict.
A team of Rapid Action Battalion( RAB) intercepted his at Dhanmondi near the entrance of BGB headquarters on the night of Apr 9 in 2012. The elite force also seized Tk 70 lakh from the car.
Yousuf Ali Mridha, former general manager of Bangladesh Railway and Enamul Haque, former commander of railway police were also in the car.
Authority sacked both of them following the incident. After the incident, Suranjit had face serious criticism from his own party and his political rival and at one stage, he was removed from the ministry.
During the investigation of the ACC it was revealed that Faruk acquired assets worth Tk one crore and 30 lakh beyond his known sources of income.
In 2012, the ACC filed a case against him. On November 26 in 2012, the ACC submitted charge sheet in the case and on Nov 27 in 2012, Faruk surrendered in court. – Staff Reporter
