Suspected militant killed in the city

A suspected militant was killed and three policemen, including the officer-in-charge of Rupnagar Police Station, suffered wounds in a reported gunfight during a raid on a ‘militant den’ in the city’s Rupnagar area on Friday night.Additional Deputy Commissioner Sanwar Hossain who heads the DMP’s bomb disposal unit identified the victim as Major Murad alias Jahangir.
He, however, said they have no information whether he actually was a member of Bangladesh army.
Tipped off, a joint team of Counter Terrorism and Transnational (CTTU) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Rupnagar Police Station launched the drive at the ‘militant den’ in a six-storey building around 9:30 pm, DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Masudur Rahman told UNB.
When the law enforcers tried to enter the top-floor flat, the slain militant chopped the policemen with a sharp weapon and opened fire at them, prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.
Murad was caught in the line of fire during the battle and died on the spot, he said.
Three policemen — Rupnagar OC Syed Shaheed Alam, its inspector (Investigation) Shaheen Fakir and sub-inspector Mominur Rahman — were injured with stabs, Masud said.
They were taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 9:45pm, said SI Bachchu Miah, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police camp.
The CTTU has recently came to know that a militant named Major Murad was living in the house but the law enforcers failed several times to arrest him as they found the room locked, Sanwar said.
He said locals informed the Rupnagar Police Station after Murad came to house on Friday night and later the joint team launched the operation.
