Sylhet city dwellers demand closure of polytechnic institute’s Surma Hostel

No arrest has been made yet in the case filed for an attack on the residence of the principal of Sylhet Polytechnic Institute and staff quarters in the city by Bangladesh Chhatra League men on Sunday night.
However, Khairul Fazal, officer-in-charge of Dakshin Surma Police Station, said police were trying to nab the accused.Meanwhile, city residents and the institute’s staff and teachers at separate meetings demanded that the authorities immediately shut down the institute’s Surma Hostel, claiming outsiders and miscreants take up residence there.Principal Prosanta Kumar Basu said a meeting has been called today to discuss the situation and determine what steps should be taken.He said there have been numerous allegations that the hostel has become a den of criminals who are engaged in crimes like mugging and extortion.‘We are thinking of temporarily shutting down the hostel in the first week of February,’ Basu said.Institute sources said around 100 people, mostly outsiders, stay at the 50-seat hostel. Sylhet Correspondent
