Talk of development and the real picture

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said in Parliament, though most of the people do not bother, “what government has done in a short time, was done by none in the past” has drawn my attention. I do not know enough about the rest of the country very well, but I can speak on the development of Dhaka. We cannot board public buses from morning till late at night and the pressure of passengers is severe at the opening and closing of office hours. If we somehow manage to  get into buses the trips take time several times higher than they should have normally taken. The CNG-powered auto rickshaws charge exorbitant fare instead of running on meters. Not very long ago, it used to take less time to move from one place to
another in Dhaka by auto rickshaws. And people used to move in auto rickshaws or taxicab and pay fare as per meter readings. Now these modes of transport have gone beyond the reach of ordinary passengers. Is this a great development!
Women as well as men can not respond to nature’s call in Dhaka City as there are a few public toilets in the city and these remain extremely filthy due to inadequate maintenance. We find filths here and there on many roadsides also.
We find many beggars in all the roads and foot over-bridges. Litters including polythenes are found here and there. The Buriganga and other rivers and ponds have turned into waste dumps of industries.
A couple of days ago, a report was published that many colleges in Dhaka are over crowded in terms of numbers of students and teachers. Staffs are working overtime in many colleges in Dhaka. Leaders of chatra league are collecting extortion by any means. Such a development was hardly seen in the past.
Women students are sexually harassed by youngsters in many institutions, and the frequency and magnitude of these humiliations have
increased in recent years.
People’s voices against the government are not welcome, rather those who speak the truth remain worried all the time and many point out that trial of Sagor and Runi murder is yet to be effectively dealt with.
Accidents have increased, people lose their limbs or life. But one minister is out to give certificate to people who can see animals on roads.
Many old ministers have not got chance in the new cabinet due to alleged corruption. The lists will only be longer and longer.
