Teacher rescued after taken hostage

Five students have been arrested for taking a college lecturer hostage for ransom, an official of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said Tuesday.

The five were arrested from the office of a courier company where they had gone to receive the ransom sent through a registered packet, he said.

RAB-4 Savar Camp Commander Captain Tahsin Salehin Rana told bdnews24.com that Mohammad Ahsan Habib, a lecturer of Alhaz Selima Rahman Technical College in Gaibandha’s Sundarganj, was taken hostage on Jan 11.

He had come to Dhaka for some urgent work , when Jabir Hossain, whom he knew before, took him to the Jahangirnagar university and locked him up.

Later, Jabir asked Habib’s wife to send him one million Taka as ransom for the lecturer’s release through the Korotoa courier company.

Hossain was arrested while trying to receive the money from the Korotoa courier service counter at Savar on Monday by the RAB personnel, who had been informed of the ransom demand by Habib’s family.

Jabir Hossain,22, is a fourth year Anthropology student at Jahangirnagar University and a general secretary of the Chhatra Union’s university chapter .

Four others arrested with him from the Korotoa counter are Shafique, 22, and Anisuzzaman Siddiqui,22, of Department of History, Shahed Shah, 24, of department of Philosophy, and Rubel Islam, 23, a third year history student at the Dhaka College.

“They were at the Korotoa counter with Jabir Hossain to withdraw the cash,” the RAB captain said. He said the lecturer was later rescued from a hall in Jahangirnagar University.

Jabir Hossain claims the lecturer Habib owed him this money.

Savar Police Station Acting Sub Inspector Abdul Bashed says they are preparing to file a criminal case against the five students.bdnews24.com
