Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hasan Mahmud Khandker on Monday said terrorism and militancy have been brought under control thanks to the law enforcing agencies acting effectively to curb such activity. The IGP made the remark while addressing the opening session of a four-day workshop on “Responding to Terrorism: Alternative Approaches” at Police Staff College in Mirpur in the capital on Monday. The objective of the workshop is to share experiences from theoretical and practical application of knowledge gleaned from local, regional as well as international perspectives on combating terrorism. The training workshop has been jointly organized by Police Staff College and International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research (ICPVTR) of Singapore. The IGP emphasized the necessity of regional and international cooperation to combat terrorism, which by its very nature concerns countries across the world and must be viewed from the global perspective. “Time has come for increasing the ability of law enforcers to mitigate and control terrorism activities,” the IGP said, adding that effective measures need to be taken through a united effort in this regard. Presided over by Rector of Police Staff College Md Nazmul Haque, the opening session was also addressed, among others, by manager of ICPVTR Jolene Jerard. Twenty four officers in the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP) or its equivalent from different police units, Border Guards Bangladesh, Special Security Force (SSF), National Security Intelligence (NSI) and Directorate General Force of Intelligence (DGFI) are participating in the training workshop. – UNB
