‘The coalface can never be cleaned’- Matia

Dhaka, Aug 27 – Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury on Sunday slammed the Chief Justice SK Sinha, using a Bengali proverb with racist undertones to compare him to coal that can never be cleaned no matter how much you wash it, adding that the people will decide how to clean him. After attending a human-chain protesting the observations of Supreme Court in the 16th amendment verdict at National Press Club, she alleged that CJ wrote a letter to Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) in favour of a corrupt judge as part of a bid to cover up each other’s misconduct.
“You yourself confessed that you were a member of Peace Committee during the 1971 Liberation War. Though Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had looked upon you with liberal eyes, the coalface can never be cleaned even if you wash it, and you have proved that,” Matia said.
“The people of the country will decide how to clean the coal like you”, she added.
Accusing Sinha of delivering negative comments about the health sector of the country, Matia said “Nothing of this country seems to please you, so why don’t you leave the country, who told you to stay in Bangladesh?”
President of Bangladesh Medical Association (MBA) Dr. Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin, its deputy secretary Dr. Md Ihtesamul Haque Chowdhury, and BMA central management committee members were also present at the programme.
On August 1st last, the Supreme Court released the full text of its verdict upholding the High Court verdict that declared illegal the 16th amendment to the constitution establishing parliament’s authority to remove Supreme Court judges.
