Govt on wrong path over 16th Amendment verdict: B Chy

Dhaka, Aug 27 – Terming a ‘wrong path’ the government’s stance on the judiciary following the Supreme Court’s 16th Amendment verdict, President of Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury on Sunday advised it to calm down.“It’ll be unfortunate if the government and Parliament take a stance against the judiciary. I would like to ask a question as to who will be responsible if an anarchic situation is created or an unexpected ruler emerges taking the advantage of the wrong path,” he said.
Speaking at a discussion, the BDB chief further said, “So, one should not play with fire. Be cool and think in a cool brain and follow the path which will be useful for the country.”
Bhasani Anusari Parishad arranged the programme at the Jatiya Press Club, marking the 2nd death anniversary of Kazi Zafar Ahmed, a former prime minister and chief of a faction of Jatiya Party.
B Chowdhury, also a former President, warned that a chaotic situation will be created in the country if the court verdicts are not honoured. “The judiciary is the guardian of the Constitution. We must accept its judgments.”
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President ASM Abdur Rab, Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, Dhaka University Professor Mahbub Ullah, journalist Kazi Siraj and BNP vice-chairman Netai Roy Chowdhury, among others, spoke at the programme. – UNB
