Dhaka – State minister for Law Justice and Parliamentary Affairs
Advocate Qamrul Islam alleged that the main opposition BNP was
hatching various conspiracies to destroy the country and its
democracy.
He also said the country would face serious catastrophe in the near
future if BNP-Jamaat alliance comes to power again.
“If we are not remained vigilant, BNP will turn the country into a
militant state like Pakistan as per the prescription of ISI,” he said
this while addressing a citizen meeting organised by Rural Journalist
Foundation at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) in the city.
However, the state minister reiterated that as per the constitution,
the next general election would be held under the supervision of an
interim government headed by the incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina.
“Yes, a dialogue can be held on the formation of an election time
government and on strengthening the Election Commission,” he said
adding that the door of holding a dialogue is always open for the
opposition but they should return to parliament first and place its
proposals in this regard before the house.
Criticizing the opposition leaders’ remarks that the country will run
following the order of BNP chief Khaleda Zia after October 25, AL
leader said it is clearly specified in the constitution that the
incumbent prime minister will be the head of the government until the
formation of the next government.
Rejecting the opposition’s demand for a non-party caretaker government
to oversee the next general elections, Qamrul Islam said there is no
necessity for a caretaker administration to oversee the elections as
the present government has already proved that a free, fair and
credible election can be held under it.
“It is not BNP, it is AL which does not believe in vote rigging,” he said.
Accusing the opposition of hatching conspiracy to make the ongoing war
crimes trial controversial, the junior law minister said the trial of
war criminals who committed crimes against humanity during the
Liberation War in 1971, is going on in a free and fair manner and
following international standard.
He also claimed that there are no criminals in Awami League. “If their
existence remains in AL, they will be brought to justice,” he added.
The organisation’s chairman Jahirul Islam presided over the meeting.
