Thirteen candidates are to contest in the upcoming 10th Parliamentary Elections-2014 scheduled to be held on January 5 next for six seats here as six nomination papers were cancelled after scrutiny, official sources said.
Awami League (AL)-nominated incumbent lawmaker HN Ashikur Rahman remains now as the only candidate after cancellation of nomination paper of his son and independent candidate Rasheque Rahman in Rangpur-5 (Mithapukur) constituency.
After scrutiny on Friday afternoon, Returning Officer (RO) and Deputy Commissioner of Rangpur Farid Ahammad cancelled six nomination papers and found 13 valid out of total 19 nominations submitted for contesting in six seats in the district.
The nomination papers of two independent candidates including General Secretary of Gangachara upazila AL Asaduzzaman Bablu and Engineer Nazrul Islam have been cancelled in Rangpur-1 (Gangachara) constituency.
Nomination papers of Mazirul Islam Litan of Workers’ Party in Rangpur-3 (Sadar & part of Gangachara part) seat and independent candidates Noman Iqbal Khoshru in Rangpur-6 (Pirganj) seat and Saidul Islam Bharsha in Rangpur-4 (Pirgachha) seat have been cancelled.
After scrutiny, three candidates including AL-nominated Ruhul Amin, JP-nominated Moshiur Rahman Ranga and incumbent lawmaker of JP Hossain Mokbul Shahriar Asif (Independent) are now in the fray in Rangpur-1 constituency.
In Rangpur-2 (Taraganj & Badarganj) constituency, two candidates including AL-nominated Ahsanul Haque Chowdhury Deuk and JP-nominated Asaduzzaman Chowdhury Sablu are in the fray.
In Rangpur-3 (Sadar & part of Gangachara part) constituency, three candidates including JP-nominated Alhaj Hussein Muhammad Ershad, AL-nominated Chowdhury Khalequzzaman and JSD leader Sabbir Ahmed are in the fray.
In Rangpur-4 (Pirgachha and Kawnia), two candidates including AL-nominated incumbent MP Tipu Munshi and JP-nominated Presidium Member of JP Alhaj Karim Uddin Bharsha are now in the fray.
In Rangpur-6 (Pirganj) constituency, two candidates including AL-nominated incumbent Prime Minster Sheikh Hasina and JP- nominated Nur Alam Jadu Miah are now in the fray, District Election Officer of Rangpur Sarker Ashraful Islam said.
The last date for withdrawal of the candidature is December 13 next, he added. -BSS, Rangpur
