Three sugar mills in Rangpur, Panchagarh and Thakurgaon launched crushing sugarcane for the 2013-2014 season on Friday to produce 18,375 tonnes sugar from 2,58,000 tonnes sugarcane, official sources said today.
In Rangpur, renowned organiser of the War of Liberation and veteran freedom fighter Majibar Rahman Master launched crushing of sugarcane at Shyampur Sugar Mills Ltd (SSML) at Shyampur under Badarganj upazila as the chief guest.
A simple ceremony was arranged on the SSML premises on the occasion with its Managing Director Shibendranath Sarker in the chair.
Badarganj upazila vice-chairman Rafikur Rahman, former Gopalpur union chairman Azizur Rahman, Joint Secretary of Bangladesh Sugarcane Growers’ Association and Presidents of its SSML unit Jahangir Hossain were present.
President of SSML unit Employees’ Association Khabibur Rahman, its General Secretary Shahjahan Sarker and sugarcane growers’ leader Abdul Wahab also spoke.
The SSML will produce 5,075 tonnes of sugar by crushing 70,000 tonnes of sugarcane at the recovery rate of 7.25 per cent this season.
In Panchagarh, Zila Parishad Administrator Advocate Abu Bakar Siddik inaugurated sugarcane crushing at Panchagarh Sugar Mills Ltd (PSML) as the chief guest with PSML Managing Director Abdur Rashid in the chair.
Boda upazila chairman and sugarcane growers’ leader Abdul Aziz, Major ATM Nazmul Huda of Panchagarh 28 BGB Battalion, President of PSML unit Employees’ Association Jamal Hossain and its General Secretary Ahmed Ali attended.
The PSML will produce 5.250 tonnes of sugar through crushing 73,000 tonnes of sugarcane at the recovery rate of 7 per cent this season.
At another ceremony, sugarcane grower Hashem Ali Sarker launched sugarcane crushing at Thakurgaon Sugar Mills Ltd (TSML) on the mills premises as the chief guest with TSML Managing Director S M Abdul Aziz in the chair.
Executive Magistrate of Thakurgaon Wasimul Bari, President of TSML unit Employees Association Mohammad Nuruzzman, its General Secretary Abdul Kuddus and President of Bangladesh Sugarcane Growers’ Association Ruhul Amin were present.
The TSML will produce 8,050 tonnes of sugar by crushing 115,000 tonnes of sugarcane at the recovery rate of 7 per cent this season, the sources said. – BSS, Rangpur
