Popular Tollywood actors-turned-politician Nusrat Jahan and Mimi Chakraborty shared photos of their first day at the Indian parliament on Twitter today. The Tollywood celebs and Trinamool Congress party members, were recently elected in West Bengal during the Lok Sabha elections.
The two Tollywood actors posted photographs displaying their identity cards as MPs on the parliament premises.
Mimi Chakraborty tweeted tagging Nusrat: “And it’s us again. First day at Parliament.”
The Trinamool party had 17 women candidates in 42 seats in West Bengal state. Of them, Nusrat and Mimi are both young and well-known West Bengal actors.
Mimi Chakraborty contested from Jadavpur while Nusrat Jahan contested from Basirhat Lok Sabha seat in the state.
Nusrat won with 350,369 votes in Basirhat, while Mimi Chakraborty’s won with 295,239 votes.
Since their candidatures were announced, the two female actors were subjected to trolling and hatred on the internet. Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee had assigned them these prestigious constituencies in West Bengal, even though they had no political experience. Consequently, memes, jokes, and sexist slurs against them flooded social media.
The online hatred further increased when they won by a huge majority in their respective constituencies.
The online shaming worsened when the two entered India’s parliament on Monday and posted pictures of themselves there. They were mostly criticized for wearing western clothes.
This did not sit well with a large number of Indians—especially Bangalis—who find that these MPs do not fit their idea of a traditional politician.
Popular Indian film-maker Ram Gopal Varma posted a video of Nusrat and Mimi and made a sarcastic comment about how India “is really really progressing ..it’s a welcome relief to see MPs who are so easy on the eye.”
