Torture of housewife for dowry: 4 sent to jail

Four female in-laws of a housewife in the city were  sent to jail on
Wednesday for torturing her demanding dowry.
Police and victim sources said , Shahnaz Begum, 22, of Noakhali was
married to Shakil Khan, son of Zaheru Khan, a businessman of Kashipur
area under Airport police station in the city eight years ago.
Shahnaz after married found that her husband Shakil was deaf and dumb
and since then family dispute continued.
Shahnaz, now mother of two children, became victim of regular torture
for dowry and   protesting concealing facts about her husband.
I tried to commit suicide to free from torture four years ago, but not
succeeded and then torture increased demanding dowry and as my family
of failed to pay that I was forced to torture increased demanding
dowry and as my family of failed to pay that I was forced to do all
work of the house as domestic help, the victim alleged.
In-laws often tortured me by pulling my hair, so I shaved out my hairs
from my head recently and then in-laws confining me inside a room
started torturing since last two days, Shahnaz told.
Taking a chance to go for toilet Shahnaz fled from the house on
Tuesday night, took shelter at neighbouring house and informed police.
Police rushed to the spot early Wednesday  rescued Shahnaz and
arrested Taslima Begum, 44, mother in law, Sonia Aktar Zerin, 26,
Kanak Aktar Shilpi, 24, and Sabina Yasmin Mala, 20, sister in-laws of
Shahnaz, said Shahidullah, Barisal Airport police station in charge.
A case under section 11(Ga) and 30 of act of prevention of repression
against women and children and section 500 of penal code was lodged
against the arrested in-laws by Shahnaz on Wednesday, police sources
said.
The arrested four female in-laws sent to jail after additional chief
metropolitan magistrate Zahidul Kabir rejected bail prayer of the
accused fixed the date of hearing of the case on July 11, 2013.
The court also ordered police to give the victim shelter at the safe
home, said Sub Inspector Abul Khair, investigation officer of the
case.
