Establishment of supremacy, collection of extortion money and controlling ‘jhute’ (cuttings of fabrics of garment factories) business in the area were main reasons behind the triple murder in Madhya Badda in the city, police sources suspected.
Awami Leaguer ward-6 president of Maddhya Badda area Shamsuzzaman Shamsu Mollah, 50, Mahbubur Rahman Gama, cultural affairs secretary of Dhaka (north) city unit Swechchhasebak League, Abdus Salam, 45, the senior vice-president of Badda union unit of Jubo League, and Manik, a manager of a local hospital sustained bullet injuries when a group of miscreants opened fire on the four while they were gossiping near the Water Tank at Adarsha Nagar around 9:30 pm, leaving them injured.Shamsu, Gama, Salam were rushed to United Hospital of Gulshan where Shamsu and Salam were pronounced dead while, Gama succumbed to his injuries at about 9:30 am on Friday morning.
Another injured Salam, rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, has been fighting for his life, hospital sources said.
Local sources said, once ‘Baul Sumon’, a ‘top terror’ of Badda area, used to dominate the area and control ‘jhute’ business as well as extortion money. Badda thana police arrested him on charge of involvement in various criminal activities about 4 months back.
Baul Sumon was associated with local Juba League, the youth afiliate of ruling Awami League. Gama, Shamsu, Manik and Salam were followers of ‘Baul Sumon’.
After languishing in jail, Baul Sumon was released in bail 15 days back because of his sickness. Later, he died of stroke several days back, policeu said.
After his death, several local groups were trying to establish supremacy in the area as well as controlling ‘jhute’ business, while followers of Sumon tried to keep their prevailing control om the area.
As a sequel to the conflict, rival group resorted the gun attack on the followers of Baul summon—Shansu, Gama, Manik and Salam—while they were gossiping in front of ‘Madhuban Bekery’ near the Water Tank at Adarsha Nagar on Thursday night.
Contacted, officer-in-charge of Badda police station admitted that rival miscreants resorted gun attack on Sumon’s followers reportedly to establish domination in the area.
We are yet to arrest any of the miscreants but we are trying to arrest thew killers, the OC Badda said. – News Desk
