Two killed, houses razed in BD localised Nor’Westers

Dhaka, Feb 26 – An elderly man was killed in hailstorm in Satkhira while another man died in a lightning strike in Brahmanbaria as localised storms struck during transition of season on Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Zamshed Ali, 70, resident of Khashpur village in Kolaroa Upazila of Satkhira, and Shamsul Alam, 32, hailing from Chhoygaon village in Barhatta Upazila of Brahmanbaria.
Zamshed was hit by a volley of hails after being caught in a hailstorm. He died on the spot, said Kolaroa Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Moniruzzaman.
Shamsul was severely injured after being struck by lightning while working in the field at Bongoj village, said Akhaura Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Ariful Amin.
He was taken to Akhaura Upazila Health Complex where doctors pronounced him dead.
In Satkhira a tornado lashed all the 12 unions of Kalaroa upazila of the district on Tuesday morning, damaging houses and uprooting trees.
The storm coupled with rain swept through the unions for five minutes from around 8:45am, said locals.
It blew roofs of many houses off and uprooted many trees.
Azharul Islam, a trader, said the tin-shed roof of his business establishment was blown off during the storm, forcing him to leave his valuables under the open sky.
Besides, a 200-year-old ancient banyan tree near a temple in Tulshidanga of the upazila was uprooted during the tornado.
The power supply in the upazila was also suspended as the wires of electric polls got snapped following the storm.
Kalaroa Upazila Nirbahi Officer RM Shahnewaz said a huge area was damaged by the storm. – UNB
