University Grants Commission official killed in Rab custody

Dhaka – Family members of Omar Siraj, an official of the University Grants Commission who died in Rab custody on Thursday, have claimed that he died due to inhuman torture in custody.
Talking to reporters at Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue, Ashraful Alam Ashraf, elder brother of Omar said, “He (Siraj) didn’t die of cardiac arrest…he died due to inhuman torture by the elite force members as Omar was put on Rab remand thrice since his arrest on September 18.”Besides, Sabina Yasmin Shampa, wife of Omar, also held the elite force responsible for her husband’s death.
Meanwhile, Wazed Ali, sub-inspector of Sher-e-Banglanagar Police Station, said Omar had several injury marks on his right hand wrist and left elbow.
Assistant director of University Grand Commission (UGC), Omar Sajraj, who was arrested by Rab-4 on Sep 18, died on Thursday under the custody of the battalion.
Members of Rab-4 arrested Omar Siraj, along with two others, from Sher-e-Banglanagar area on September 18 for their alleged involvement in leakage of medical college admission test  examinations papers.
Contacted, ASP Mojahid, Operationss officer of Rab-4, said Omar Siraj was taken on a 2-day remand (September31&October 1) under Rab-4 custody for interrogation in connection with leakage question papers of recruitment under Judicial Service Commission.
Suddenly he felt chest pain at around 4:45 pm on Thursday. He was admitted to National Institute of Cardio Vascular Diseases (NICVD) at Sher-e-Banglanagar at around 5:30 pm where he died at around 7:15 pm, ASP Mojahis said.
Family members of Omar Sajraj however complained that he died of alleged severe torture that he had been subjected during the period of custory of the force. – News Desk
