National University students blocked the busy Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in front of the University on Sunday, demanding cancellation of the newly introduced grading system in its examinations.Witnesses said the students who could not pass the hounours first-year final examinations (2010–11 session) under the new grading system blocked the highway around 11am following a futile meeting with the university authorities.
The students from different colleges, including Tongi and Vaowal College of the district, sat with the university authorities in the morning seeking reevaluation of their results.
As the university authorities did not consider their demand, the students formed a human chain on the university campus and then blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway torching tyres, creating severe traffic congestions.
They also vandalised a number of vehicles on the highway.
As police tried to disperse them by charging baton, a clash between the law enforcer and the students broke out in the area, leaving five students injured.
Later, traffic on the highway returned to normalcy at about 1 pm after police brought the situation under control.
Contacted, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the university Prof Dr Munaz Ahmed Noor said the grading system cannot be cancelled as it is a globally practiced system. – UNB
