Upazila Chairman killed in AL factional fight over food distribution

The Dhobaura Upazila Chairman Furkanuddin Selim has been killed in a clash between two factions of the ruling Awami League in Mymensingh.Police and locals say at least 20 were gravely injured in the clash that took place at 4pm on Sunday.
The Upazila Chairman, Furkan Uddin Selim, who was known as ‘Paharhi Selim’ in the area, died at a hospital in the evening.
A gravely injured Selim was brought to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital from Dhobaura Health Complex along with his two brothers ‘Mojnu’ and ‘Tipu’.
Local administration had enforced section 144 on Sunday due to the rising rivalry between two Awami League factions.
The clash took place violating Section 144 imposed p[rohibiting assembly of five or more persons.
Supporters of Selim got into a scuffle with supporters of Awami League Upazila unit General Secretary Azizull Hauqe of Gamari Toli at noon over food distribution.
The programme was arranged to celebrate the upgrading of 31-bed Dhobaura Health Complex to a 50-bed health facility.
Dhobaura Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Alamgir Hossain told reporters Azizul Haque’s supporters gathered before Upazila Council office at 4pm. Selim’s supporters later made their way there.
“Upazila authorities enforced section 144 to prevent anything bad from happening.” Dhobaura police OC Abdul Haque said two factions clashed at Dairparha. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the warring parties.
Tension was running high in the area even though the clash stopped and RAB and police are patrolling the area to maintain peace, said the OC. – bdnews24.com
