Upazila Parishad fifth phase elections June 18

Dhaka, May 9 – The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday announced the schedule for holding elections to 16 Upazila Parishads of 14 districts in the fifth and the last phase of the Upazila Parishad Election on June 18.
According to the election schedule, the deadline for submission of nomination papers is May 21, while the date for scrutiny of nomination papers is May 23 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is May 30.
The symbol allocation will be started on May 31 and on the same day; the candidates could start the campaign.
The EC declared the election schedule signed by the deputy secretary of Election Commission Mahfuja Akhter on Thursday.
The commission also decided to dispatch two assistant returning officers to Sadar Upazilas.
The upazilas including Nakla upazila of Sherpur, Naldanga of Natore, Kamarkhanda of Sirajganj, Sundarganj of Sirajganj, Rangabali of Patuakhali, Taltoli of Barguna, Gazipur Sadar, Narayanganj port upazila, Madaripur Sadar, Kalukhali of Rajbari, Shayestaganj of Habiganj, Banchcharampur and Bijoypur upazila of Brahmanbaria, Comilla Sadar and Noakhali Sadar Upazila.
For the first time, the fifth Upazila parishad elections are being held under the party banner.
The main contest is between Awami League-nominated candidates and rebels, as the major political parties, including the BNP, are boycotting the polls.
In the previous phases of local government elections, AL men, without any surprise, bagged the majority of chairman posts.
Earlier, the first phase election was held on March 10 while the second phase held on March 18. The third phase was held March 24 and fourth phase was held March 31. – Staff Reporter
