Mayor of Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) Alhaj Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu on Monday stressed for expansion of the highly effective ‘Urban Partnership Project for Reducing Poverty (UPPRP) in all 33 wards in the city.
The UPPRP is being implemented successfully in 15 wards of the City Corporation through 85 Community Development Clusters (CDC) benefiting 29,327 hardcore poor and distressed women to improve their livelihoods through eradicating poverty, he said.
Jhantu said this while presiding over a coordination meeting of RCC with UPPRP authorities to discuss joint action plan for expanding the project in other 18 wards of RCC to eradicate urban poverty through brining self-reliance to the extremely poor people.
The UPPRP has been running successfully in RCC area with financial assistances of the UNDP and UKaid to ensure socio economic uplift of the extremely poor urban population including distressed women and their children.
Chief Executive Officer of RCC Ruhul Amin Khan, its Panel mayor Golam Kabir Kajol, Secretary Fazlul Kabir, Superintending Engineer Emdad Hossain, Town manager of UPPRP Liyakat Ali, RCC Councilors Shafiul Islam Shafi, Jahurul Islam Azabbar, Abdul Kader and Shahjalal Karim Bakul, addressed the meeting.
The speakers said the UPPRP has been enhancing incomes of the poor and slum dwellers of the city through infrastructural development, animal husbandry, poultry, small-scale enterprises and cottage industries to bring economic well being for them.
The RCC Mayor put special emphasis on adopting long-term work plan and innovating ways for further expanding the UPPRP activities in the other 18 wards of RCC making those more dynamic, sustainable and effective for building a poverty-free city. -BSS, Rangpur
