Veteran journalist Syed Mahmud is no more. (Innalillahe wainna ilaihe raziun.) He breathed his last at 10.30 pm on Friday at the United Hospital, Dhaka. He would have attained 79 on 01 May next. Syed Mahmud had been under treatment at the hospital following a massive heart attack from 1st March last. He had been confined to his residence due to old age complications including heart aliment for some years.
A former Assistant Editor of the Daily Ittefaq, The Dainik Bangla and a senior journalist of the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Syed Mahmud was highly respected for his integrity and straightforwardness. Till his death he was the Executive Editor of GreenWatch Dhaka online newspaper
Eldest son of Syed Abdur Rauf, former member of Bengal Legislative Assembly before the 1947 Partition, Syed Mahmud has left behind his wife, two daughters and a host of relatives. His elder sister late Hasina Ashraf was a renowned journalist of now defunct Dainik Bangla and younger brother Syed Mahmud Firoze is a senior joirnalist.
His nanaz-e-Janaza will be held after Zohr prayer in Journalist Residential Area mosque and at 3 pm at the Jatiya Press Club. Syed Mahmud will be laid to eternal rest at the Azimpur graveyard, family sources said. – Staff Reporter
