Rajshahi – In spite of having a direction regarding the appointment of Vice-Chancellor of Rajshahi University (RU) in the Rajshahi University Act 1973, it has not been followed since 2001.According to section 11 (1) of this Act, a VC panel consisting 3 members will be elected by university senate and Chancellor will appoint one of them finally. But since the 2001 this provision is being ignored.
Professor M Saidur Rahman was last appointed RU VC following the university law on August 4 1999. Later, Professor Faisul Islam Faruquy, Professor Altaf Hossain, Professor Abdus Sobhan, and Professor Muhammad Mizanuddin have been made RU VCs breaching the law, informed sources said.
On the other hand, after resignation of Professor Saidur Rahman in November 12 2001, no senate meeting is yet to be held. After being charged with duty Professor Muhammad Mizanuddin called senate meeting twics on 18 and 19 May 2015 respectively where several agenda regarding the annual budget, approval of adopted decisions except election of VC panel were in list.
Teachers, students and officials of the university are of the opinion that, to protect democracy and autonomy the university law must be enforced in appointment of VCs. – RU Correspondent
