Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday questioned why the intelligence agencies failed to sense the BDR mutiny beforehand.
Addressing a discussion meeting in the capital, the BNP leader also said the reasons of failures of the intelligence agencies must be unearthed through fair, neutral and objective investigation.
“We must know why intelligence agencies failed in the BDR mutiny. It must be unearthed through neutral and objective investigation,” Fakhrul told the discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in Dhaka.
The BNP-led 20-party alliance partner Jatiya Ganatantrik Party aka Jagpa organised the discussion.
The BNP leader also alleged a conspiracy is underway to make Bangladesh a failed state.
“In the verdict of the BDR mutiny case, the judges too underscored the need for an investigation into the intelligence failure.
“This is such a big incident… some 57 brilliant and patriotic army officers were killed in a few hours. When did it happen? It happened just after a new government was formed. What was the motive? Was it aimed at making the government fail or to make Bangladesh fail as a country?
“Such a large number of army officers did not have to lay down their lives, even in the liberation war. Who benefited most from the killing of these 57 army officers… those who want to destroy Bangladesh’s security arrangement and to weaken the morale of the armed forces?
“We must dig out these issues through fair, neutral and objective investigation,” added Fakhrul.
The BNP leader also asked why prompt action was not taken to quell the mutiny. “Why did the authorities take hours after hours to arrive at a decision [regarding the mutiny]?
“I don’t want to blame anybody, but a fair and neutral investigation was not carried out in this connection. Even the investigation carried out by the armed forces has not been made public as yet. The full investigation report of another investigation has also not been published. We’ve the right to know these things.”
