World AIDS Day-2013 observed in Rangpur division

The World AIDS Day-2013 was observed in all eight districts under Rangpur division with a fresh call for creating awareness and obeying social values to prevent formidable threat of deadly disease.

The Day was observed with the theme of ‘Zero new HIV infection and zero AIDS related death: Vow for building a discrimination-free world’ through various daylong programmes everywhere.

The district health administrations in association with different government and non-government organisations arranged colourful rallies, cultural functions, screening of documentary films and presentation of folk songs and discussion meetings.

In Rangpur, hundreds of people including officials and employees of government and non-government, sociocultural and voluntary organisations, professionals, teachers and students brought out a huge colourful rally in the city streets.

Divisional Director (Health) Dr Shahadat Hossain led the rally and attended the main discussion meeting held at the conference room of the Civil Surgeon as the chief guest with Civil Surgeon Dr Reajul Islam in the chair.

Deputy Director (Local Government) of Rangpur Ershadul Haque, former President of Rangpur unit of ‘Pollisree’ Ahsan Habib Rabu and President of Rangpur Podatik Advocate Rothish Chandra Bhowmick Babu Sona addressed as the special guests.

The speakers said that there is no alternative to creating mass awareness among common people, especially young generations and vulnerable groups, for preventing spread and formidable threat of the deadly HIV/AIDS diseases.

They narrated the deadliest consequences of HIV/AIDS and asked for launching stronger movement involving all in the society through creating awareness and following the social values for building a HIV/AIDS-free Bangladesh.

They urged the government, non-government organisations and the conscientious citizens to come forward without any further delay with effective steps to resist the threat of HIV/AIDS to protect the people from the wrath of these killer diseases.

The chief guest suggested for taking special measures with an accelerated velocity to stop spreading of HIV infection as the country has become vulnerable to incurable AIDS disease and also Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

There is no alternative to create adequate social awareness in motivating the vulnerable group people, sex workers, injecting drug users as well as the youth community for leading safer life to save the future generations from wrath of the killer diseases, he said.-BSS, Rangpur
