A writ petition was filed with the High Court seeking its directives upon the government to constitute a judicial committee to probe the killing of Sohagi Jahan Tonu, who was found murdered in Comilla cantonment area on March 20.It also sought HC directive on the police for the arrest of Tonu’s murderers.
The petition also prayed to the HC to direct the government to give Tk 30 lakh as compensation to the victim’s family.
Advocate Eunus Ali Akond, a Supreme Court lawyer, filed the petition, challenging the ‘inactivity’ in the investigation since police were yet to make any arrests over the murder.
The petition also prayed to the HC to issue a rule asking the government to explain why its inactivity of the defendant should not be found illegal.
A total of eight officials including home secretary, defence secretary, inspector general of police, Comilla superintendent of police have been made respondents in the petition.
The HC may hold hearing on the petition on Monday, Akond said.
Tonu was a second year history student at Comilla Victoria Government College and a theatre activist.
According to a press release of ISPR, the unconscious body of the 19-year-old college student was found in the bordering area of the cantonment by the victim’s father and he informed the military police.
Right away, Tonu was taken to the Combined Military Hospital there where the duty-doctor declared her dead.
The discovery of Tonu’s body within several yards of her home at Comilla Cantonment on March 20 has caused intense public outrage about security. Police suspect she was raped before her murder.
Later, Tonu’s father, Yar Hossain filed a murder case with Comilla Kotawali Police Station.
The investigation has gone from police and the Detective Branch to Crime Investigation Department (CID) as public protests continue in Dhaka and other parts of the country.
