Zia Orphanage case documents to reach HC Sunday

Dhaka Mar – 7-The documents of the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case are likely to be sent to the High Court Division of the Supreme Court on Sunday.Mokarram Hossain, a bench assistant (Peskar) of the Special Judge Court-5 of Dhaka disclosed this to newsmen Wednesday.
The High Court Division on February 22 accepted the appeal petition filed on behalf of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia challenging the lower court verdict and seeking her acquittal in graft case.
Earlier, on February 19, Khaleda Zia’s lawyer received the 1174-page certified copy of the judgement of the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case to file the appeal challenging the verdict. Later, on February 25, the High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim passed an order saying that it would give its order on Khaleda Zia’s bail petition in the case after getting the lower court documents in the case.Earlier, the High Court asked the lower court to send documents of the case within 15 days.
Meanwhile, on February 22, the court stayed the fine of Tk 2.10 crore slapped on Khaleda Zia in the case. The file of the lower court is awaited for getting the order of the apex court.
On February 8, Judge Dr Md Akteruzzaman of the Special Judge Court-5 of Dhaka sentenced Khaleda Zia to five years rigorous imprisonment and also fined Tk 2.10 crore in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. Since then, she has been confined in Old Dhaka’s central jail.
Five others, including her son Tareque Rahman were sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment each. The court also fined them Tk 2.10 crore saying that the six convicts would pay the fine equally.
Meanwhile, The High Court (HC) Division of the Supreme Court yesterday accepted the appeal petition filed on behalf of former BNP lawmaker Kazi Salimul Haque Kamal challenging the lower court verdict that sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment with fine in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
Besides, the apex court stayed the lower court verdict that fined Salimul Haque in the same case. The court will hold its hearing on the appeal later.
The High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim passed the order on Wednesday. Advocate Palash Chandra Roy, submitted the petition with the High Court on behalf of Salimul Haque on Tuesday.
On February 8, Special Judge’s Court-5 of Dhaka sentenced Khaleda Zia to five years’ rigorous imprisonment after it had found her and five others including Salimul Haque guilty in the graft case. – Special Correspondent

BNPs Swecchasebak Dal leader Babu on 7-day remand
Dhaka, March 7 – The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka yesterday put pro-BNP Swechchhasebak Dal president Shafiul Bari Babu on a seven-day remand yesterday in a case filed for alleged attempts to create obstacle interrupting law enforcers.
Magistrate Sabbir Yasin Mahmud Chowdhury passed the order after the police sought a 10-day remand in the case filed with Shahbagh Police Station of the city.
Besides, 11 leaders of Jatiyatabadi Chattra Dal and Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal were placed on three days’ remand each in the same case.
Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal, Jatiyatabadi Chattra Dal and Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal are three affiliated organisations of Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
Earlier, on Tuesday arms-wielding plainclothes police detained Swechchhasebak Dal president when BNP formed a human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the capital. – Special Correspondent
