Zia ‘reestablished’ multi-party democracy, iterates CEC

Dhaka, Oct 26 – Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda on Thursday defended his remark that Ziaur Rahman, the founder of BNP, reestablished multi-party democracy in the country. He claimed that his remark was based on fact and he did not make anyone happy.
“When Ziaur Rahman, also former President of the country, formed the new political party, there was no democracy in the country. Not after 1975, there had been democracy before 1975,” the CEC added.
He said, “What I exactly said is Ziaur Rahman reestablished, not established, the multi-party democracy in the country.”
The CEC made the claim at a post-dialogue press conference at Nirbachan Bhaban in the city. – UNB
