Home Minister MK Alamgir on Tuesday said the government would welcome BNP’s road rally in the capital provided it is ‘peaceful’.
“If they (BNP) does not violate people’s rights, don’t torture people, does not explode bombs or vandalise vehicles… we would welcome it even if we do not support it,” Alamgir told journalists at Kochua.
However, he warned that tough measures will be adopted if the Opposition violated laws and sought recourse to violence.
Meanwhile, BNP’s standing committee member Tariqul Islam on Tuesday assured that the programme in capital scheduled for Wednesday would be a peaceful one. He claimed that ‘hundreds of thousands’ would join the road rally that is expected to encircle Gabtoli, Kawran Bazar, Dholaikhal, Jatrabari, Shabujbagh and Badda.
The opposition BNP is set to kick off the mass contact campaign in the capital Dhaka on Wednesday to press the government for a non-partisan body to oversee the next national elections.
BNP-led opposition 18-Party Alliance enforced a countrywide road blockade on Dec 9 to press for identical demands.
Later they also enforced a general whole day strike on Dec 11 protesting against alleged government obstruction to the road blockade programme.
On Dec 13, another half-day general shutdown was enforced in protest against the arrest of BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir (detained on Dec 10).
Regarding the plan of the journalist bodies to lay siege to the Home Ministry to pressurise the government for speedy investigations into the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, Alamgir said that will not help the case or speed up investigations.
“We are trying our best… when we find something positive, we will let all know.”
Maasranga TV news editor Sagar Sarowar and ATN Bangla senior reporter Meherun Runi were killed in their rented flat in the city’s Rajabazar area on Feb 11 this year.
The High Court on Apr 18 directed the police to transfer the twin murder case to Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) since the police detectives could not make any progress until mid-April.
