Bangladesh and Thailand will sign two memorandums of understanding to strengthen bilateral relationship, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni said on Friday.
One of the MoU will be on agriculture cooperation and the other on regular Secretary-level meetings, she said after meeting Thailand’s Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra at the Sonargaon Hotel.
Yingluck Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand, arrived Dhaka on Friday afternoon on a two-day official visit.
A special flight carrying Thai PM landed at Shahjalal International Airport at 5:30pm and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina received her counterpart.
The Thai premier will hold talks with her counterpart Sheikh Hasina on Saturday.
She will also have talks with opposition leader and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and Foreign Minister Dipu Moni during her whirlwind visit.
There are many areas of cooperation between Dhaka and Bangkok including trade, agriculture, manpower and connectivity as well as regional cooperation.
All the bilateral issues would be discussed during the official talks between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her counterpart at her office on Saturday, Moni said.
Replying to a question, Moni said there had been no discussion with the Thai Premier regarding BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s younger son Arafat Rahman Coco.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a media statement said Moni thanked the Thai Prime Minister for her country’s supporting Bangladesh’s bid to become member of Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM) and for selecting Dhaka as the venue for BIMSTEC Secretariat.
She also hoped that the visit of Shinawatra will renew momentum for a deeper and broader cooperation between Bangladesh and Thailand.
Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina received the Thai Prime Minister at the Shahjalal International Airport.
It is the first visit of any head of government from Thailand to Bangladesh in more than eight years.
