100 hurt in Habiganj post-polls violence

Dhaka-At least 100 people, including several policemen, were injured in a spate of post-polls violence in Gopay union of Sadar upazila on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.Locals said a clash took place between the supporters of Awami League rebel candidate Aktar Hossain, who came out victorious in the election, and Awami League contestant Abul Kalam on Tuesday night.
As a sequel of the incident, a fresh clash broke out between them at Gopay village on Wednesday morning.
On information, a team of police, led by officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Nazim Uddin, went to the village and fired rubber bullets to control the situation.
However, the chases and counter-chases between the supporters of the winning and the losing candidates continued for about five hours from 7am to 12 pm, leaving at least 100 people, including police personnel, injured.
Among the injured, Shahjahan, Mizanur, Samsur Rahman, Rajab Ali, Ujjal, Kutub Ali, Shamim, Safar Ali and Abdul Hashim were admitted to Habiganj Adhunik Hospital.
Several shops were also torched by the feuding groups during the clash.
OC Nazim Uddin said additional police forces have been deployed in the area to avert further troubles.
