11 fall sick: Hunger strike for classrooms at JU

Teachers and students of Geological Sciences (GS), Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) departments of Jahangirnagar University began a fast-unto-death programme protesting the university authorities’ decision.
Sources said, eleven students including a teacher became sick by observing the hunger strike. Among them, the condition of Mahbubur Rahman and Shikha Moni of CSE Department is serious.Prof Sharif Uddin chairman of CSE department said, whereas our students should remain busy with studies, they are now in fast-unto-death for classrooms.
Teachers of the two departments on Saturday decided to resign.
The teachers of CSE department submitted their resignation letters to the JU registrar on Saturday, while teachers of the Geological Sciences department would submit letters on Monday, said assistant professor Mazeda Islam, acting chairman of Geological Sciences department.
Registrar Abu Bakr Siddique said, actions would be taken by the authorities according to the university act.
Earlier, JU syndicate formed a committee of five members to investigate the situation and give a recommendation.
Last Thursday, the syndicate decided to move the environmental sciences department into a newly constructed building, which resulted in protest from the other two departments. – JU Correspondent
