16, 000 dogs to be vaccinated in Gaibandha

A total of 16, 000 dogs, including pet and stray ones, in seven upazilas in the district will be vaccinated from March 22 to 25 with an objective of building Gaibandha as a rabies free district.
Of the total, 2, 600 dogs will be brought under Mass Dog Vaccination (MDV) programme in Gaibandha sadar upazila , 1400 dogs in Fulchhari upazila, 3, 300 dogs in Gobindaganj upazila, 1, 800 dogs in Palashbari upazila, 2, 100 dogs in Sadullapur upazila, 1, 900 dogs in Shaghata upazila and 2, 900 dogs in Sundarganj upazila.This was disclosed at a briefing meeting organized by Sadar Upazila Health Department on Wednesday noon.Acting Upazila Parishad Chairman Rashida Begum addressed the meeting as the chief guest and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ashraful Momin Khan was present as the special guest.Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer (UHFPO) Dr. Shahadat Hossain Khandkar presided over the function.The meeting was also addressed, among others by Upazila Livestock Officer Dr. Rahmatunnabi, Veterinary Surgeon Dr. Abdus Samad, Consultant of the Programme Dr. Sohel Rana and Gidari Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Golam Sadek Lebu.Consultant of the programme Dr. Sohel Rana said rabies is a deadly virus which can be spread by any animal.He said in Bangladesh, 2, 000 human deaths take place every year for not taking preventive treatment after dog biting.In this connection, the consultant suggested all the infected people to go to physicians without delay and take proper treatment before symptoms such as weakness, fever, headache, anxiety, confusion and fear and avoidance of water of rabies begin.UHFPO Dr. Shahadat Hossain Khandkar in his concluding speeches sought cooperation of all concerned to make the MDV programme in the upazila a grand success to attain the cherished goal.All the UP chairmen, MDV consultants, supervisors and field level health personnel including journalists of the print and electronic media attended the function. -BSS, Gaibandha
