17 Jahangirnagar University students suspended

Savar (Dhaka), Jan 30 – The authorities of Jahangirnagar University (JU) suspended 17 students on separate charges of sexual harassment, taking drugs, and assault.
The decision was taken at the January 18 syndicate meeting, said Acting Registrar Rahima Kaniz.
An official notification, published on January 29, said 11 microbiology students were found guilty of sexual harassment. They had published screenshots from a secret messenger group
containing lewd comments about female students and teachers.
Among the 45th batch students, Md Nayem-E-Akter, Ijaj Ahmed, Md Mehedi Hasan and Iqbal Hossain have been suspended for one year; Md Sajib Hossain, Md Al-Amin Shoishab, Md Abu Nayem, and G M Tariqul Islam for six months; and Md Shahriar Khan, Nahidul Islam, and Md Omar Faruq for three months.
Nine of them, except nahidul and Faruq, have also been slapped with a Tk5,000 fine.
The syndicate also suspended Azgar Hossain Rabbi, a fourth-year drama and dramatics student,
for three months for harassing a female student of the same department two years ago.
Sazzad Hossain Sayem of computer science and engineering, and Moeen Uddin Jony of Bangla
have been suspended for six months for taking drugs. They were caught red-handed from room
335 of AFM Kamaluddin Hall on August 11, 2017.
The authorities also issued warnings to eight other students who were found involved in the same
incident.
Apart from them, Md Ridwan Rashed Soyan and KM Mahid Hasan of drama and dramatics, and
Ahsanuzzaman Shawon of marketing have been suspended for assaulting three students on the
campus.
They are students of the university’s 47th batch. – UNB
