Two Bangladeshi girls have returned home from India after completion of their three
years’ jail term in that country.
The Indian authorities handed over the two girls to the Bangladesh authorities at
Benapole check post on Tuesday.
The returnees are Safi Sardar, 14, daughter of Hobi Sardar of Dighalia upazila of Khulna,
and Kawsar Begum, 12, daughter of Nurul Haque of Ukhia upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
Officer-in-charge of the immigration police at Benapole check post Qamruzzaman said a
team of Indian police had arrested the two girls from a house in Bengalore of India three
years back while serving as domestic helps.
Afterwards, they were sent to an Indian prison where they served three years’ jail term.
Upon completion of the jail term, the two girls were later kept in a shelter home.
The Indian government has returned them following repeated requests the Bangladesh
home ministry did by sending several letters.
The detainees were sent back to Bangladesh by a special representative of the Indian
government.
