2 sentenced to death in Comilla, Faridpur

Dhaka  – A tribunal of Faridpur and a court of Comilla on Tuesday convicted a man and a woman and sentenced them to death in
different charges.In Faridpur, a tribunal sentenced a man to death for killing a woman after raping her at Bilbhara village in Bhanga upazila in 2011.The convict is Mizanur Rahman, 31, a resident of Bilbhara village,UNB News Agency Reported.
The court also fined him Tk 1 lakh.According to the prosecution, Mizanur took a woman named Aklima Akhter to a garden at Bilbhara village on December 11 in 2011 and raped her.Later, he killed her and dumped the body in a well.On the following day, Sub-inspector of Bhanga Police Station Abdul Jalil Miah filed a case against four people including Mizanur.After examining all documents and witnesses, Judge of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal M Fazlur Rahman handed down the verdict acquitting three others.In Comilla, a court sentenced a woman for killing her expatriate husband at Maligaon village in Daudkandi upazila in 2006.
Shahina Akter, 29, killed her husband Abdus Salam, a resident of Maligaon village. Shahina was tried in absentia.The court also fined her Tk 20,000.According to the prosecution, Shahina had developed an extramarital relationship with her neighbour Masud Alam in the absence of her husband, who was living in Saudi Arabia.However, Shahina’s husband Salam returned home form Saudi Arabia on
September 20, 2006.Four days after his arrival at home, Salam went missing on September 24.On the following day, police recovered the body from a pond adjacent to his home.Victim’s mother filed a case against unidentified people in this connection.Later, police arrested Shahina as they found her involvement with the incident and she made confessional statement before the court.However, the court granter her bail, and she has since managed to evade arrest.Acting on her information, police arrested Masud.However, Masud committed suicide in prison before the submission of the charge sheet.After examining all documents and witnesses, Judge of Additional District and Session Court 4 of Comilla Nurnahar Begum Sheuli handed down the verdict.
