22,000 more quality in 34th BCS reviewed results

The Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) on Sunday published the reviewed preliminary test results of the 34th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examinations amid protest by students against results declared on the basis of quota system.A total of 46,250 candidates came out successful, PSC Public Relation officer Meer Mosharraf Hossain told reporters.
The number is up 34,217 from the previously published result on July 8, when 12,033 candidates were declared successful based on quota system.
The results will be available on the commission’s website www.bpsc.gov.bd. The results will not be posted on the commission’s notice board, according to PSC sources.
Over 2,21,575 candidates filled up forms online for the test held on May 24 this year.
According to a PSC media statement on Saturday, the results were declared based on the previous system.
Preliminary results used to be released based on numbers. Quota provision used to get considered in the final results after written and oral examinations.
This is the first instance of quota being considered in preliminary. In the result many meritorious students who took the examinations were left out.
Agitated students in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country took to the streets last week after the preliminary results based on quotas were announced.
They set up a daylong blockade at Shahbagh last Wednesday.
In the face of agitation, PSC announced a re-evaluation of results on July 10 but protesters were apparently not pacified.
At least 19 people were injured on July 11 as Dhaka University campus turned into a battlefield with protestors clashing with police for their demanding scrapping of quota system in government jobs.

Students of Rajshahi University formed human chain and brought out procession and held a rally by creating blockade on Rajshahi-Dhaka highway demanding cancellation of quota system.
They demanded the release of detained students and meet their demands; otherwise they vowed to continue the movement until the demands are met.
The road blockade led to huge traffic congestion on the highway.
The strike called by demonstrators of Shahbagh Merit Evaluation Square was also observed in other universities including Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, BUET, Bangladesh Agricultural University and SUST peacefully.
