A total of 2,479 beneficiaries, who worked for five years under a project, got their
savings money from the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) here
recently.
Office sources said a project titled rural employment and roads maintenance programme
(RERMP) was implemented in all the seven upazilas in the district from July 2008 to
June 2013.
The LGED supervised the government funded programme aimed at alleviating poverty
of widows, divorced and distressed women through engaging themselves in income
generating activities side by side with the development of the rural infrastructures.
As many as 2,479 rural women were engaged in the RERMP and Tk 90 was allocated for
each of the beneficiaries per day as wage.
Of the amount, Tk 54 was given to a beneficiary woman in cash and the rest Tk 36
deposited as savings to a joint account of the beneficiary and the executive engineer of
LGED in a bid to make herself reliant in future.
In this way, amount of savings money against each account holder stood over Tk 70,000
in last five years.
After ending the programme in June 2013, the officials of LGED took necessary
measures to disburse the deposited savings to the beneficiaries through cheques.
Accordingly, each of the beneficiaries received the cheque of savings money ranging
from Tk 69,000 to 71,000 from the department after cutting banking charge and other
duties.
Asiran Beoya, a project beneficiary, expressed her gratefulness to the LGED
officials over returning back savings money without any hassle and changing her lots
economically after engaging in the project.
Executive engineer of LGED M. Belal Hossain said almost all the beneficiaries had
already become self reliant economically after being involved in the programme and were
