25 cases filed over pre-strike violence

Police on Monday filed 25 cases with 20 police stations over Sunday’s pre-shutdown violence in capital Dhaka.

“Officials of the police stations have filed the cases with regard to vandalism, arson attacks and bomb explosions,” Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (Media) Masudur Rahman told bdnews24.com.

The BNP-led 18-Party Alliance called the 36-hour nation-wide shutdown for Monday and Tuesday demanding that authorities release over 150 leaders and activists arrested on Mar 11 in a raid on the party headquarters in Naya Paltan after an opposition rally ended abruptly amid explosions and clashes.

DMP spokesperson Rahman said two of the cases filed with the Uttara police stations were over bomb explosions while the rest were filed over vandalism and arson attacks.

The cases have been filed with the Ramna, Shahbagh, Darussalam, Paltan, Lalbagh, Kotwali, Motijheel, Jatrabarhi, Gendaria, Tejgaon, Tejgaon Industrial Area, Sher-e-Bangla, Adabar, Bhasantek, Pallabir, Kafrul, Banani, Uttara North, Uttara East and Mohammadpur police stations.

The police official could not say how many had been implicated in those cases.

Rahman added the law enforcers have also detained 46 persons for their suspected link to vandalising of five vehicles and torching of two more during Monday’s strike in the capital. bdnews24.com
