3 arrest made over Panchagarh hindu priest murder

Three people—two suspected members of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and a Shibir man—have so far arrested in connection with the killing of a Hindu priest in Debiganj upazila of Panchagarh.Police super of the district Gias Uddin said police arrested JMB men Khalilur Rahmna, 45, and Babul Hossain, 40, and Jahangir Alam, 25, an activist of local Islami Chhatra Shibir, during a drive in the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.The arrested JMB activists were accused in the 2005 series bomb attack case, said police.Meanwhile, two cases were filed with Debiganj Police Station on Sunday night in connection with the murder. Rabindra Chandra Roy, elder brother of slain priest Jogeshwar Roy, filed a case while sub-inspector of the police station Majibur Rahman the other one under the Explosive Substances Act.

Besides, police formed an eight-member committee with additional police super Deen Mohammad as its head to oversee the progress of investigation into the killing.On the other hand, several thousand people staged demonstrations in the upazila headquarters on Monday protesting the killing of the Hindu priest.Under the banner of ‘Debiganj Upazilabashi’, the demonstrators formed a human chain at Bijoy Chattar in the morning.People from all walks of life, including students, took part in the human chain programme and demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the killers.Jogeshwar Roy, 50, a Hindu temple priest, was hacked to death and Gopal Chandra Roy, 35, a devotee, was shot in an attack by some miscreants in Debiganj upazila on Sunday morning.
