3 cops among 5 indicted over custodial killing in city

Dhaka – A court here on Sunday framed charges against five people, including three policemen and two police informants, in a case filed for torturing jhut trader Ishtiaque Ahmed Jony to death in police custody.
Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge M Qamrul Hossain Mollah framed the charges and fixed May 16 for recording testimonies of the witnesses.The chargesheeted accused are sub-inspector of Pallabi Police Station Zahidur Rahman Khan Zahid, two ASIs of the same police station- Qamruzzaman Mintu and Rashedul Islam and two police informants–Sumon and Russell.
Of them, Zahid and Sumon are now in jail while ASI Qamruzzaman Mintu and ASI Rashedul Islam on bail and Russell on the run.
On February 8, 2014, a group of 25-26 policemen, including SI Zahid, launched a drive at house during wedding ceremony in Irani camp area and arrested Jony.
Police took Jony to Pallabi Police Station and tortured him there.
As Jony fell sick due to the torture, he was admitted to a local clinic and then shifted to Suhrawardy Hospital where doctors declared him dead on the morning of July 13 in that year.
On August 8, 2014, the victim’s younger brother, Imtiaz Hossain Rocky, filed a case with the CMM court.
On February 17, 2015, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Maruf Hossain accepted charges against the five accused and submitted a judicial inquiry report to the metropolitan session judges’ court.
