39 AL, BNP and JP leaders chosen as Champions of Peace

Dhaka, December 5, 2018: The Democracy International (DI) recognized 39 central level political leaders from AL, BNP and JP for their achievements in championing peaceful and participatory elections at an award ceremony. Since the launch of the Shantite Bijoy campaign, the leaders have paved the way for party leaders and activists to participate in constructive multiparty events across Bangladesh including peace rallies, face to face dialogues between candidates and voters, multiparty roundtable meetings, and workshops to address citizens’ issues.
At the award ceremony, Bangladesh Awami League’s advisor to the Prime Minister, H T Imam said, “This `Champion of Peace’ award will inspire political leaders to foster the spirit of peaceful elections. Such peacebuilding processes should occur frequently.”
Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, a member of BNP’s National Standing Committee, said, “Peace requires social and political justice. The political parties of Bangladesh should break down the political divides and engage in constructive debates to resolve their issues.”
Ziauddin Bablu, Jatiya Party Presidium member, said, “We are learning the democracy-building process. There is some good progress and hopefully, we will continue to improve all aspects of our democracy.”
