40-day employment generation programme begins in Gaibandha

A 40-day employment generation programme of the government for the hardcore and the seasonal unemployed people has been launched in the district on Saturday.

The aim of the special programme is to assist the poor particularly the day and farm laborers of the district in overcoming their poverty and job crisis like situation during the lean period.

District Relief and Rehabilitation office sources said a total of Taka 10,67,92,000 have been sanctioned for the 13,349 workers to implement different development projects in rural areas of all the seven upazilas in the district.

Upazila wise breakup of the workers are- 2362 in Fulchhari upazila, 2542 in Sundarganj upazila, 1334 in Shaghata upazila, 2485 in Gobindaganj upazila, 1387 in Sadullapur upazila, 2089 in Sadar upazila and 1150 in Palashbari upazila of the district.

The project works include construction and reconstruction of

kutcha roads, bridges, culverts, earth filling and excavation and

re excavation of derelict ponds and canals and removing water

hyacinth from different water bodies, sources said.

Each of the workers would get Taka 200 per day as wage from the programme that would continue in the district till starting the full harvest of T-Aman paddy in the month of December.

From their daily payment 25 taka would be cut as saving per head which would be returned back to the workers after ending the programme.

Talking to the BSS district relief and rehabilitation officer Shah Alam said the work of the programme had already started in Sundarganj and Palashbari upazilas in the district on November 23 and the work in other five upazilas would begin very soon. -BSS, Gaibandha

‘Cultural activities can create awareness against social curses’

The youths could play vital role in creating awareness against child marriage, dowry, domestic violence and repression, human trafficking, eve-teasing, drugs, divorce etc through cultural activities, speakers said on Saturday.

They were addressing a dialogue of graduate adolescents before a cultural function organised by BURO Bangladesh at Chilmari town in Kurigram under its Economic and Social Empowerment of the Hardcore Poor (ESEHP) Project on Saturday.

The Stromme Foundation extended cooperation in organising competitions for adolescents in the cultural function on dance, singing songs, staging drama, quiz, debate and other subjects to focus on the bad impacts of social curses.

Members of seven dialogue centres, 13 adolescents’ dialogue centres, five pre-primary schools and one peoples’ organisation participated in the dialogue and competitions. Prizes were distributed among the winners at the end of the programmes.

A large number of people including adolescents, NGO officials, community leaders, women activists, public representatives, guardians, teachers, students, religious leaders, matchmakers, guardians, farmers and local elite were present.

With President of Chilmari Upazila Women and Children Repression Prevention Committee Professor Monirul Alam in the chair, Professor Abdul Mottaleb of Chilmari Degree College addressed the occasion as the chief guest.

Chilmari Branch Manager of BURO Bangladesh Shahinur Rahman, it’s Social Mobiliser Shameema Akhter, Assistant Professor Iqbal Hossain Badal and noted social worker Anwarul Islam Dulal addressed as the special guests.

The speakers said the number of incidents related to social curses already reduced significantly in recent years following maximum emphasis put by the government and different NGOs on conducting motivational works everywhere. They asked the young generation for arranging more cultural programmes to provide information to the grassroots people for creating awareness on the social curses, gender issues, marriage registrations, safe motherhood, maternal and neonatal mortalities etc. -BSS, Rangpur
