6 held over Mymensingh upazila chairman murder

Police early Monday arrested six people from different places of Dhobaura upazila on charge of their involvement in the killing of upazila parishad chairman Forkan Uddin Selim.   Police said a team of police conducted an overnight drive in different points of the upazila headquarters and arrested the six, whose names could not be known yet.   Police refused to disclose their identity for the sake of investigation.   Meanwhile, the emergency section 144 that the local administration clamped in the upazila headquarters to fend off any untoward incident is still in force.   Members of police, Rapid Action Battalion and Border Guard Bangladesh were seen patrolling the area to avert any further trouble.   Earlier, Dhobaura upazila parishad chairman Forkan Uddin Selim was killed and 20 people were injured in a clash between two factions of local Awami League on Sunday. Forkan was also a leader of the upazila unit of the ruling party.   Dhobaura upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Alamgir Hossain told journalists on Sunday that the incident had taken place when supporters of Forkan and general secretary of Gamaritala union unit of AL Azizul Haque locked in a scuffle over distributing foods at a function arranged to mark the upgrading of Dhobaura Upazila Health Complex on Sunday afternoon. – UNB
