7 to die for murder in Narsingdi

Dhaka- A court here on Monday sentenced seven people, including four members of a family, to death for killing a man in Polash upazila here in 2009.The convicts–Alek Miah, his wife Rupban, and two sons Sharif Miah and Arif Miah, Abdul Gaffar, Marfat Ali and Tota Miah of Galimpur village in Palash upazila-were also fined Tk 20,000 each. All of them were tried in absentia.According to the prosecution, Shamsul Haque and his son Jahirul Haque were stabbed by the accused on the night of August 31, 2009 as a sequel to previous enmity over the ownership of a land. Later, Shamsul was declared dead at a hospital.Nur Jahan, wife of Samsul, filed two cases against 26 people with Palash Police Station for killing her husband and attempting to kill Jahirul.Later, police submitted a charge-sheet against 20 people to a court after a long-term investigation.After examining the witnesses and documents, Judge of Additional District and Sessions Judge’s court Mohammad Shahin Uddin handed down the verdict.The court also acquitted 13 other accused in the case as the allegations brought against them could not be proved.The court also sentenced the seven accused to five years imprisonment in another case filed for attempt to kill Shamsul’s son Jahirul and fined them Tk 10,000 each, in default, they will have to suffer six month more jail.UNB news agency
