75 pc pay hike prescribed for media workers

The government has announced a new salary structure for print media and news agency employees with a 75 percent rise in the basic pay.The Ministry of Information issued a gazette notification to this end on Sunday, 15 months after the formation of the 8th Wage Board.
As per the order, the new pay scale will come into effect from Sept 11.
The notification said the government went for 75 percent hike considering the ground reality although the 8th Wage Board Committee had recommended 70 percent.
A bdnews24.com spokesperson said the new pay structure will be implemented at Bangladesh’s first online newspaper from the given date.
On Jun 18 last year, the wage board was formed to recommend a new salary structure for newspaper and news agencies. In October, the Board announced a 50 percent dearness allowance which took retrospective effect from Jul 1, 2012.
On Jun 30 this year, the Wage Board increased the basic wages of media employees by as much as 70 percent with other perks also to be raised accordingly.
The government had formed a committee headed by Cultural Minister Abul Kalam Azad to review the recommendations.
Sunday’s gazette notification was published as per the committee’s recommendations. – bdnews24.com
