8 foreigners held while fishing illegally in BD territory

Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard detained eight foreign nationals and their two Bangladeshi watchmen from the Karnaphuli Bridge ghat here on Thursday night for illegally fishing in the Bangladesh waters. The coastguards also seized a trawler, ‘FV Namnavee’, worth about Tk 7.5 crore from the S Alam Jetty area of the Karnaphuli River.   The arrested foreigners include five Thai nationals and three Myanmar citizens.   Operation officer of Coast Guard (East Zone) Lt Commander M Mohiuddin said a team of the force, on a tip-off, conducted a drive in the jetty area around 9pm and detained the foreign nationals along with the trawler while they were catching fish in the Bangladeshi water territory illegally.   They were later handed over to Karnaphuli Police Station and a case was filed in this connection. – UNB
