8 injured in cops-students clash in CU

At least eight people—seven students and a policeman—were injured in a
clash between police and students of Chittagong University (CU) on
Tuesday morning following the blockade of a railway line to protest
against increase of admission form fees.
Campus sources said Progatishil Chhatra Jote, a combine of
left-leaning student bodies, had been staging demonstration for last
three days demanding cancellation of the increase in admission form
fees to Tk 500 from Tk 400 for the first year honours students.
As per their earlier announced programme, when hundreds of students of
the Chhatra Jote tried to block the railway line in front of the
university at about 8:15 am, police charged batons to disperse them,
leaving 7 students injured.
A policeman was also injured when the agitating students threw
brickbats towards police.
Later, additional police rushed to the spot and brought the situation
under control.
Police picked up three students, including Chhatra Front president
Prabal Majumdar, from the spot, said Liton Mitra, assistant proctor of
the CU. –UNB, Chittagong
