The copies of the death warrants against death row top leader of banned terror outfit Harkat-ul Jihad al-Islami Bangladesh (HUJI-B) Mufti Hannan and his cohort Sharif Shahedul Alam reached Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur.
The death warrants reached Kashimpur Jail from Sylhet Central Jail Wednesday night.
Inspector General of Prisons (IGP) Brig Gen Syed Iftekhar Uddin disclosed the information while speaking to the media at the jail around 12:30pm yesterday.
The warrants have reached Kashimpur jail, he added.
Meanwhile, Mufti Hanna’s another cohort Delwar Hossain alias Ripon, who is now detained at Sylhet Central jail, will also seek presidential clemency.
Sylhet Central jail Superintendent M Sagir Ali disclosed it yesterday adding Ripon took the decision.
We shall sent the mercy petition to the President through due process, he said.
He said, around 12pm Ripon informed the jail authority that he would file the petition for a pardon.
Sagir Ali said, we have provided him paper and he is drafting his mercy petition.
Replying to a question, he said, the family members of Ripon would meet him tomorrow( Friday).
As per jail code, if he wants, he can meet his lawyers too, the jail super explained.
Mufti Hannan and his aid Bipul informed the prison authority that they will seek presidential clemency earlier on Wednesday. But Ripon told the prison authority that he would take decision over filing the mercy petition after consulting his family members.
As per jail code, the three HUJI leaders have seven days, from Wednesday, to file his petition.
Mufti Hannan and two other HUJI activists, Sharif Shahedul Alam alias Bipul and Delwar Hossain alias Ripon were awarded the death penalty for the 2004 grenade attack on the then UK envoy in Sylhet.
HUJI leader Mufti Hannan and Bipul are being kept at the Kashimpur High Security Prison in Gazipur while Ripon is lodged at the Sylhet Central Jail.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court published the verdict, rejecting their petitions for review of their sentences, which was read out to them yesterday.
After losing the last legal battle , the three have only option of seeking presidential clemency by admitting their crimes.
According to the jail code, they will now get seven days to petition for pardon.
If the president rejects their pleas, the government will fix a date and prison authorities will start the process to execute the verdict.
In May 2004, then British High Commissioner Anwar Choudhury came under a grenade attack while coming out of the Hazrat Shahjalal’s shrine in his hometown Sylhet.
Police’s Assistant Sub-inspector Kamal Uddin died instantly. Constable Rubel Ahmed and one Habil Miah succumbed to their injuries in a hospital later.
